- Sachet
- Dried potpourri packets which contain a fragrant mixture of dried herbs and flowers. (See potpourri)
- Saddle
- Piece of stone forming the top of a shower curb.
- Safety Warnings
- General safety issues or warnings associated with a product (e.g. do not expose to wet environment).
- Saltillo
- Terracotta tile from a particular area of Mexico that is made in the traditional, primitive method. (See Terracotta)
- Sandalwood
- Rare and precious perfume where the essential oil develops in the roots and heartwood of the tree, which requires at least 15 to 20 years.
- Sandstone
- Porous material with a very fine grained texture, which is lighter than slate and quartzite, but can be used in the same applications including floor, wall, and counter tiles. Sandstone is typically split like slate and, therefore, may have an uneven surface.
- Satin
- Machine honed surface that replicates a hand rubbed finish. (See Surfaces)
- Scale
- Device used for weighing.
- Scent
- A distinctive odor.
- Sconce
- Decorative light fixture which is attached to a wall.
- Screw
- Threaded cylindrical pin or rod with a head at one end, used to hold parts together.
- Sealer
- Coating that protects unglazed tile or stone and grout from moisture and stains. There are two kinds of sealers: 1. penetrating, which allows the tile or stone to “breath” and keep their natural appearance and 2. surface sealers, which may add luster or shine to the tile or stone. - Seasonal
- Products available for purchase only during specific times throughout the year.
- Seaweed
- Marine algae with numerous beauty benefits, including detoxification and moisturizing.
- Selling Kit
- Collection of products sold together to complete the bath or part of the bath (e.g., shower system with a showerhead, handshower and body spray sold as one unit).
- Selvage
- The edge of woven fabric finished so as to prevent raveling, often in a narrow tape effect, different from the body of the fabric.
- Service Parts
- Saleable parts which service a product.
- Sgraffitto (Scraffitto)
- Method of surface decoration for tile achieved by scratching through a top lay of clay slip to expose the differently colored bisque clay. (See Bisque, Clay)
- Shade
- Fabric, glass, or novelty covering added to a light fixture to enhance the decoration, shield the light source, and/or direct the light. (See fabric shade, glass shade, novelty shade)
- Shade-Holder
- Part or parts of a light fixture into which the fitter of the glass shades or globes fit. (See fitter, glass shade)
- Shag
- Fabric cut in overlapping layers to give a fringed appearance. (See fabric)
- Shaving Products
- Cleansers, lotions, and tools that are used for shaving.
- Shea Butter
- Wild West African tree that yields a fruit known for its vitamin A, D, and E, and for protective beauty benefits.
- Shelf
- Flat surface, usually comprised of glass, affixed to a wall and used to hold and display objects.
- Shelf Life
- Length of time a product may stored without becoming unsuitable for use or consumption.
- Shiny Copper Finish
- Copper with a brownish-red hue which will oxidize with time to produce the look of tarnish. Regular cleaning is required to prevent patina.
- Shower Arm
- Shower trim component that connects the showerhead and water supply line behind the finished wall of the shower enclosure, delivering water to the showerhead. (See Showerhead)
- Shower Caddy
- Basket used to hold toiletries in the shower.
- Shower Cage
- Shower structure with a system of arms that wrap in a circular formation to provide a series of body sprays in addition to the showerhead. (See Showerhead)
- Shower Curtain
- Curtain that prevents water from splashing out of the shower area.
- Shower Drain
- Fitting installed in the bottom of a shower floor that carries water to the piping below. (See Fitting)
- Shower Rod
- Straight or curved piece of metal that is attached to a wall on both ends and used to hold a shower curtain.
- Shower Rose
- Showerhead that works with gravity to provide a straight, fine streamline of water in a showering space. (See Showerhead)
- Showerhead
- Device that delivers water in a showering space, which may have an adjustable spray feature for regulating the flow of water from the showerhead.
- Showering Bathtub
- Flat bottom bathtub, which provides easy maneuvering while standing. (See Bathtub)
- Shrinkage
- Contraction of a fabric from finishing and washing. (See fabric)
- Side / Profile View
- Drawing illustrating the side view of a product.
- Side Table
- Small accent table used for display, which is usually placed either against a wall or aside from the principal table. (See table)
- Silver Finish
- An electroplated coat of silver over a base brass metal creating a clear, bright reflection.
- Single Arm
- Sconce or pendant containing only one arm and light. (See pendant light, sconce)
- Single Ended Bathtub
- Bathtub with backrest at one end, and the drain and fittings at the other end, typically suited for one individual at a time. (See Bathtub, Fittings)
- Sink
- Bowl, equipped with a drain hole and potentially an overflow hole for running water, for the purposes of washing or bathing. (See Overflow)
- Sink Caddy
- Basket used to hold toiletries near a sink.
- Sizing
- Solution used as a finisher for fabrics, which stiffens the surface to protect against wear. (See fabric)
- Slab
- Slice of a large block of stone. Also refers to a fabricated piece of stone that has been cut and finished to particular specifications for a washstand or counter.
- Slab Support
- Metal bracket that attaches the slab to the wall for extra support.
- Slate
- Clay-based, fine-grained rock usually formed in deep oceans, which is easily split into thin layers.
- Slip
- Liquid clay which typically is pigmented, applied to bisque clay, and fired to produce a matte coloring that must be sealed. (See Bisque, Clay, Matte, Sealer)
- Slip Resistance
- Slightly textured floor bottom that prevents one from slipping.
- Slippers
- Loose, soft type of shoe for wearing indoors.
- Soaking Bathtub
- Bathtub with a deep, ergonomic water well. (See Bathtub)
- Soap Basket
- Basket used to hold toiletries affixed to a wall in a bath.
- Soap Dish
- Dish designed to hold a bar of soap.
- Sovereign Finish
- Nickel plated finish with a chemically enhanced patina creating the appearance of an aged finish which is primarily non-reflective.
- Spacers
- Small plastic pieces used to maintain even joints between tiles. Usually used with mechanically made tiles.
- Special Samples
- Special requests, such as a color rendering, which is a 2 D line drawing representation of a mosaic pattern done in the specific stone colors of the pattern.
- Splay
- Top finish piece used in conjunction with a cove moulding to transition from a vertical to a horizontal surface. Typically used in mud installations. (See Moulding)
- Sponge
- Item used to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. (See exfoliate)
- Spout Bodies
- The main body of a spout, which is a fitting that delivers water from the faucet valve to the basin or bathtub.
- Spray
- Small spray nozzle separate from the kitchen faucet, connected to a pullout hose for full flexibility and function when spraying dishes or cleaning the inside of the kitchen sink. Also known as a rinse. (See Kitchen Sink)
- Spray Bar
- Shower fitting with nozzles which provides a stimulating spray of water. The spray bar not adjustable requires the use of a valve for regulating the flow of water.
- Spring
- A coil of wire compressed between two pieces to create a tight fit.
- Stain Resistance
- The ability of a product to resist staining.
- Stainless Steel
- Alloy steel containing 12 percent or more chromium, so as to be durable and immune to rust and corrosion.
- Stainless Steel Sink
- Sink composed of 18/10 Chrome/Nickel (stainless steel) that is durable and immune to rust and corrosion. The underside of the sink is sprayed with a rubberized undercoating to provide a sound-deadening barrier, eliminate condensation, and reduce heat transfer. (See Sink)
- Standard
- Standard field tile and mosaics that are common in the market place, (e.g. 12" x 12" field tile, 1cm mosaic).
- Stationary Mirror
- Mirror with a fixed position; not movable.
- Steam Control
- Device that controls the temperature and amount of steam in a showering space or steam room.
- Steam Generator
- Component that produces steam in a showering space or steam room.
- Steam Head
- Fitting that delivers steam in a showering space or steam room. (See Fittings)
- Steam Shower
- Shower that produces water vapor using a humidifying steam generator in a showering space.
- Steel
- Hard, strong, durable, malleable alloy of iron and carbon widely used as a structural material.
- Stem
- Intermediate part between a handle and a cartridge. (See Cartridge)
- Stoneware
- Strong ceramic tile that is high-fired, well vitrified, and non-porous. (See Ceramic, Porous)
- Stool
- Short single seat on legs or a pedestal without arms or a back.
- Stopend
- Molding or trim used to finish a run of architectural elements with a full profile end. (See Moulding, Architectural Element)
- Storage Capacity
- Pertains to the storage space of a piece of furniture.
- Storage Type
- Concealed or exposed storage attributed to a piece of furniture. (See concealed, exposed)
- Style
- A particular kind, sort, or type as with reference to form, appearance, or character.
- Substrate
- Surface to which tile or stone is adhered. (See Surfaces)
- Suite
- Collection of products that share a design detail, and are usually comprised of a combination of a bathtub, sink, watercloset, or bidet. (See Bathtub, Sink, Bidet, Watercloset)
- Supply Kit
- Carries water from supply lines in the wall or floor to the fittings or waterclosets. It can also function as a service stop for maintenance purposes. (See Fittings, Watercloset)
- Surface Trim
- A trim tile with a convex radius on one or more edges, and used for turning corners. Surface trim includes bullnoses. (See Trim, Bullnose tile, Surfaces)
- Surface-Mount
- Product that is mounted to a wall; not recessed. (See recessed)
- Surfaces
- Hard surfaces in ceramic, glass, stone, or concrete.
- Surround; Tub Or Shower
- Walls encircling a bathtub or shower area.
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Highly emollient oil with a sweet scent that heats, nourishes, and moisturizes.
- Swivel
- Allows for the manipulation of the direction of spray or water stream.
- Swivel Joint
- Pivoting ball and socket joint.
